The P10 is Huawei’s latest high-end smartphone in a more compact form factor compared to the company’s Mate 9 phablet. The Leica-branded camera comes with the same specification as its equivalent in the Mate 9 and combines a 12MP color sensor with a 20MP monochrome chip.

Both lenses have an F2. As before, color and monochrome image information is combined for better image detail, higher dynamic range and lower noise levels.

Don’t even consider putting it in your front jacket pocket if you have any occasion to reach down. If you buy this thing, put a screen protector on the BACK of the unit for some grip or you will find yourself cursing.

One month with this Huawei and it looks as if it was left in the dryer.

If it shoots mono natively then it’s another story. Thats what I want to know 20mp or 12mp should I set it at. The monochrome sensor is 20mp and the color is 12mp.

Does it upscale to 20mp if I take a color photo?

I’m seeing much better results than Pixel or iPhone 7 but somehow but somehow DPR finds the others better in some way shape or form. If it use both cameras and then convert the photos to bnw it’s not worth.

Otherwise it would be like having a very little Monochrom yes, with all the other problems of noise and not having a real leica sensor, but it will be still the only smartphone camera to do this kind of “thing”.

I got it and I love it, I seldom make photos with mobile phones, my usage is more photos with one of my pocket cameras and then transfering them to my phone and from there sharing them with family when i’m out.

If you are in mode Y, you can’t use features D, E, F. Takes time to learn all these restrictions reminds me of Sony Ax series cameras with their restrictions and deep menus, although not quite as bad – HDR takes a bit longer than on Galaxy series and esp.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very nice phone cam. That’s why I chose it, but it does have its own quirks and limitations – just like any other phone.

Excellent review! Thanks SO much! I do feel I understand all of the pros and cons going in! Wonderful, you reviewed the P10 but in the “Image quality comparison” you actually see the Mate 9 a totally different phone.

By the way, the image quality produced by the P10 is garbage full of noise, artifacts and limited in DR even at base ISO and abysmal at higher ISO valueslower in fact then the single chip camera found on the P9 lite and nowhere near the very good quality of P9 or Mate 9.

We are planning to exchange them with the P10 shots as soon as possible. I’ve compared the two phones side by side and the P10 looks absolutely terrible in contrast to the very good Mate 9.

I don’t know why the image quality is that bad but from what I’ve seen is beyond bad. It may be a software thing but I suspect Huawei decided to use smaller and cheaper sensors thus the image quality has significantly downgraded.

Here is a comparable scene shot with both the P10 and Mate 9. The difference at pixel level is beyound doubt obvious. Obs: The images were take on a different time and lighting, but evaluation shouldn’t be hard to make.

You are almost always better off cropping manually after shooting. The Huawei uses image information from the mono sensor for digital zooming, so you could get the same effect by shooting in 20MP mode and cropping from those images.

Lars, that’s not true. I have just tested a Huawei P10 Plus and the 2x zoom in the 12 megapixel mode delivers slightly more detail and slightly less noise than a crop in the 20 megapixel mode.

Then you can shoot and talk and have much better photos. Saves phone batteries. Compass and other features.

Leica branded is exactly that. They actually say, “Engeneered by Leica”. Most all, Leica camera and lenses are made in Japan or Thailand by Panasonic.

They are very good, but the companies use the, “Good Names”, to make their products look good and they have to cost more. My Nikon lenses say, “Made in Thailand.

Wow, finally! Looking at the low-light studio scene, the colored circles of the P10 show almost no aliasing. This is even better than many ILC cameras!

Many pro cameras, are not so good in Video :. Why do phone manufacturers make photography as a main feature of their devices but does not include dedicated shutter buttons on the lower right side of the bodies?
